Grand Island Democrats – Platform Snapshot

Grand Island Democrats want a safe, welcoming, and affordable community with good jobs, protected natural areas, and open, honest local government that works for everyone.

Big picture

  • Grow our local economy with environmentally friendly businesses and more everyday services on the island .
  • Keep taxes fair while protecting essential services and investing in our future .
  • Make town government open, ethical, and responsive to residents .
  • Protect our environment and waterfront, and expand parks, trails, and recreation .
  • Stand up for workers, unions, fair wages, and equal opportunity for all.

Key talking points

  • Jobs and local businesses
    • Attract “clean” businesses that create good jobs and grow the tax base without harming our environment.
    • Bring more basics—grocery, health care, retail and services—onto the island so people can shop and work close to home.
  • Fair taxes and responsible growth
    • Keep property taxes from becoming more burdensome by growing business tax revenue instead of piling costs on homeowners.
    • Limit sprawl and focus on a walkable, bike‑friendly town center and existing neighborhoods.
  • Open, inclusive government
    • Make budgets, meetings, and records easy for residents to see and understand .
    • Hold regular public “Town Hall” meetings and encourage citizen involvement in decisions.
    • Ensure fair hiring, oppose nepotism, respect all religions and non‑religious people, and keep church and state separate.
  • Climate, environment, and infrastructure
    • Promote rooftop solar, heat pumps, and electric town vehicles to cut pollution and save money over time.
    • Work with Erie County and new York State to maintain safe roads, a reliable sewer system, and “complete streets” that are safe for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders.
  • Community life and recreation
    • Build a centrally located community center for youth, adults, and seniors, funded mainly by business taxes and grants .
    • Expand parks, trails, bikeways, water access, and community events like concerts, festivals, and outdoor movies .
  • Justice, equity, and opportunity
    • Support community‑oriented policing, fair courts, and the least severe penalties that still keep people safe .
    • Expand affordable housing, fight discrimination in housing, and respond to homelessness with proven, compassionate approaches .
